I visited Malcolm X Park also known as Meridian Hill Park in Washington, DC for the first time in years on Sunday August 30, 2015.. I was looking for a place to take picture. Now I know what the world needs. It needs more drums.
Washington, DC is suffering from crime wave with the murder rate way out of hand but there is something wonderful going on within its limits.
On weather friendly Sunday afternoons as I discovered there is a Drum Circle representing people from all over the world that has been gathering for about 50 years in the park. It is open to anyone who has something to strike on and willing to get on the beat.
There were fat drummers, skinny drummers, old drummers, young drummers, men and women, rich and poor representing the colors of the rainbow. The music made you move. It was also playing background to yoga, picnics, sports and other activities taking place in the park.
People were dancing with not a care in the world. For about 4 hours it was nothing but peace and love.
Maybe the world would be a better place if there were more drums.
Birthday parties are wonderful times. Great memories can be relived with pictures. You should enjoy your party and let a professional photographer capture the moments. After the cake is eaten and your guest have left, you will have pictures that will let you enjoy the party again and again.
One client said “Yes, you captured the moments very nicely. I’m still enjoying the event & spirit of the day and your photos!” Another said “the photos brought the biggest smile to my face and took me right back to that evening. I had a BALL and these images will remind me of how blessed I am.”
Nice lady in long red dress quickly corrected me when I referred to her parasol as an umbrella. She was enjoying a day with family and friends at a 4th of July cookout.
Now I know. Parasol usually refers to an item designed to protect from the sun; umbrella refers to a device more suited to protect from rain. Never call a fancy parasol an umbrella!
Ladies, do you have a parasol for these hot sunny days?

Engaged couple playing pat-a-cake
Engagement pictures for a fun couple. I was trying to think of a pose for them on the floor so I suggested this children’s game but had no idea they were experts at it. They played for about 20 minutes it seemed. Truly a fun couple who enjoy each other’s company.
Question? What is the name of this hand game? Is it Patty Cakes, Pat-A-Cake, or something else?
Thinking of Big I think there are things that we are never too big for like playing and having fun. Engaged couple playing patty cake during their engagement photo session.
What’s more fun than the playground on the first day of fall. Two boys enjoying the tube slide. They noticed that I had climbed inside to take a picture. Not sure if they thought I looked silly or if they were just smiling.

Two young boys playing in ice bucket at a family event . There was a pool, a swing set, a trampoline and other things to keep them amused. Nevertheless, they chose the ice in the bucket. Simple fun!
It was Saturday morning and I decided that my grandson would be my model for the morning. After some shots in the bedroom of him just relaxing and watching his favorite Cars videos, he moved the action into the kitchen.
With very little effort he mounted the stools like a pro. Acting as though I was invisible and as if the camera was not pointing directly at him, he proceded to climb onto the kitchen counter. After rendering a few bars of a selection on a pitch pipe and playing with an action figure toy, he decided to find out what was in the little box we use to store salt.
The adventure continued with his deciding that the box needed to have more than just salt in it. Anything handy that was pour able was then added to the salt-box and what couldn’t fit into the box was spilled onto the counter.
It resulted in a big mess but gave me some great pictures.
What pictures have you taken of your little one being him or herself?

A few years back I posted an article When the Carnival Comes to Town. The carnival has returned yearly since then but last night I decided to go back camera in hand and take more photographs.
This year the carnival is in a bigger place and can spread out with all its glory. The colors and motion of the Ferris Wheel are fascinating. On my previous visit I was taken by the secretiveness of the carnival and how it seemed to be tucked away in a little corner. I photographed in black and white. Now the carnival seems more open and expressive and needed to be photographed in color.
The carnival is now located in a large open space near a Walmart in Landover Hills, Maryland with huge parking space versus in a smaller more isolated place years back . From the outside it seems to be drawing a lot of people but I haven’t been tempted to go inside as the view from the outside with the lights and Ferris Wheel is enough.
I remember when the carnival came to the little town in North Carolina where I grew up. One week there was a carnival in the open field and then a few weeks later there was a gospel tent meeting in the same space. It was quite a contrast considering some of the “entertainment” that was included in the carnival shows back then.
Carnivals have been a life time fascination. I know they are open during the day sometimes but the magic of the carnival is at night. Maybe it’s darkness and lightness both trying to be in the same place. The colors shout out into the night making a wonderful mysterious view.
Does a carnival come to your town or have you been to one in recent years? Any carnival stories?
